Cohabitation visa
Documents to be submitted with a visa application:

When applying for a visa, you need to present the following documents at the embassy or consulate responsible for your place of residence:

  • A valid travel document (e.g. international passport) valid for three months longer than the visa. It is advisable that your passport contains at least two double blank pages reserved for visas (blank front and back) for each applicant (so, if a child travels with parent in the parent’s passport, there should be 4 blank pages (blank front and back), i.e. 8 blank pages.
  • Two visa application forms correctly completed, signed and accompanied by three recent color photographs bearing a true likeness to the applicant.
  • One copy of the Belgian identity card or residence or settlement permit issued to the partner residing in Belgium.
  • A document proving that the two partners are not married, not more than three months prior to the date of application
  • Future cohabitants' birth certificate.
  • Proof that the relationship is stable and long-term (e.g. letters, plane tickets, photographs, etc.).
  • Proof of sufficient and regular personal financial means like: recent salary slips, bank statements, income tax papers papers OR Proof of sponsor's financial means like: salary slips of the last three months, bank statements, income tax papers and Formal Obligation (annexe 3Bis/bijlage 3Bis) from the Municipality in Belgium (original + copy). The annexe 3bis/bijlage 3bis needs to be printed out recto/verso on one piece of paper. Annexe 3bis/bijlage 3bis printed out on two distinct pieces of paper will not be accepted.
  • A valid travel insurance policy, either individual or group, with a minimum cover of 30,000 Euro and valid for all Schengen countries
Complementary documents to be submitted if the future cohabitant that you will join is not Belgian or a non-citizen of EU or EEA
  • An extract from your judicial record (Police clearance), not more than six months prior to the date of application and covering the last 5 years.
  • A medical certificate completed by a Belgian Embassy or Consulate approved medical centre not more than six months prior to the date of application
  • Proof that the person that you will join has an adequate housing (property act, registered lease, etc.)

  • Documents should be submitted in original + 2 photocopies. All originals are returned.

Important :

  1. The documents listed above are only the basic documents to be submitted in all cases. Additional documents may be requested by the Embassy or Consulate and Applicants may also be invited for an interview.
  2. Official documents issued in Russia or in Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan must be apostilled/legalized and accompanied with a translation that must be apostilled/legalized.
  3. The above mentioned type 'C' visa is for valid for all Schengen countries and is intended for a short stay up to 90 days.
